ziya tabassian recherche menu principal aller au contenu about concerts music photos video discography projects contact rechercher : about ziya tabassian began playing the tombak (iranian drum) at the age of ten. after a brief initiation period in iran, he continued his autodidactic training in quebec, his adopted homeland. from 1994 to 2001, he studied classical western percussion with julien grégoire and obtained a bachelor’s degree in interpretation from the université de montréal. in a residency at the banff centre in the winter of 2003, he explored the contemporary repertoire with iranian percussion instruments, which was to have a lasting influence. a tireless traveller, he is continuing his personal research in advanced courses with bahman rajabi (teheran), aziz alami (fez), trichy sankaran (toronto), mısırli ahmet (istanbul), shree sundarkumar and yogesh samsi (india). as a percussionist, ziya tabassian is professionally active in early music (medieval, renaissance and baroque), as well as contemporary, current and world music. he performs with several other musical groups, including the ensemble caprice and has performed several concerts in almost 40 countries in some prestigious festivals and concert halls. supported by the conseil des arts et des lettres du québec and the canada council for the arts, he has many albums to his credit on some major labels. he has also performed in recordings by the kronos quartet, kayhan kalhor, mercan dede, hossein omoumi, en chordais and lo’jo. his first solo album, tombak, stemming from his acoustic explorations and research on the rhythmic cycles of early persian music, was released in 2007 on the ambiances magnétiques label. ziya tabassian commence l’apprentissage du tombak (percussion iranienne) dès l’âge de dix ans. après une courte période d’initiation en iran, il continue sa formation en autodidacte. de 1994 à 2001, il a étudié la percussion classique occidentale auprès de julien grégoire à montréal et il obtient un baccalauréat en interprétation de l’université de montréal. en hiver 2003, il a été en résidence au banff centre for the arts , où il a exploré le répertoire de musique contemporaine sur les instruments de percussion iraniennes. il a continué ses recherches personnelles avec des cours de perfectionnement avec bahman rajabi (tehran), aziz alami (fez), trichy sankaran (toronto), misirli ahmet (istanbul), shree sundarkumar et yogesh samsi (inde). comme percussionniste, ziya tabassian est actif autant dans le milieu de la musique ancienne (moyen-âge, renaissance et baroque) que la musique contemporaine et actuelle, ainsi que dans l’univers des musiques du monde. ziya a déjà présenté plusieurs concerts dans une quarantaine de pays, dans des salles et des festivals prestigieux avec des ensembles de renommée internationale. plusieurs fois boursier du conseil des arts et des lettres du québec et du conseil des arts du canada, il a plusieurs disques à son actif avec entre autres, l’ensemble constantinople, ensemble caprice, le kronos quartet, mercan dede, en chordais, lo’jo. son premier disque solo, « tombak », qui est le résultat de ses explorations sonores et recherches des cycles rythmiques de la musique ancienne persane, a paru en 2007 sous l’étiquette ambiances magnétiques. percussion © ziya tabassian
